I was thinking about all the people we see on TV and in the newspapers who strive to get rich and famous and the Lord showed me something very important about their lives. Once they reach their goals and the whole world is theirs — their lives begin to crumble. Getting there is a lot of work but once they reach what they feel is the zenith of their careers and the money starts pouring in — then the challenges begin to both their safety, their reputations and their characters.
Yes — they can buy anything they want and they surround themselves with beautiful homes and all the luxuries money can buy — but they are still unfulfilled — always searching — always desiring the limelight but hating every minute of it. As they are driven to seek recognition and monetary rewards they become captive to their life styles. The more famous they are — the more confined their lives become as they slowly build their gilded cages around them.
Male actors and musicians find themselves adored by beautiful women — women to sleep with — women who want a “part of them.” Groupies flock to them and press in to be close to them, famous by association. As the men reach out to enjoy what is thrown at them– jumping from city to city and bed to bed they reap the benefits of fleshly desire and the consequences of STDs, unwanted paternity suits, divorce, scandal, embarrassment and more – but they never quite find happiness in relationships that last. Empty to the core.
Famous women are expected to be beautiful at all costs — for without beauty their fame will fade and their money will dry up and their lovers will move on to someone else of promise. Their privacy is a thing of their youth. They can’t gain weight or become pregnant without major speculation and being analyzed without mercy under a microscope. Look at the lives you see daily in the tabloids, They are judged publicly and harshly in magazines, TV and the internet. Women with money who become thieves, drug addicts, alcoholics, divorced, cougars, etc are exploited with public jokes as their life styles are revealed. Even as they try to find credibility in doing good works and humanitarian gestures they come under criticism and reproach.
The life of the Rich and Famous is not easy but they never realize what they have become until it’s too late. Always worried about their public but yet weak. Idolized by millions — they become secluded, isolated, alone. Targets for drug pushers who want to get their claws into them and their money. Targets for the manipulators; stalkers; — the piranha of life — who gain their trust and become the inner circle — their entourage — which is a fancy word for “hanger-on-ers”. Those are the “friends” that money buys. Trust is something they no longer understand. Their haughty attitudes separate them from the common people. Paranoia sets into their lives.
Politicians and the rich hire bodyguards to try to protect them and keep their “gilded cages” safe. They lie, they cheat — all in the name of protecting their empire. Power is the name of the game — and power will destroy them in the end.
Job 27:8-10 For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he may gain much, if God takes away his life? Will God hear his cry when trouble comes upon him? Will he delight himself in the Almighty? Will he call on God?
So what is the answer?
I Timothy 6:6-15 6Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords.
Money is not going to kill you but your attitude towards money could kill your soul.
So little children — my word for today is to desire God and the things of God —- and not the world. Keeps your eyes on Him and you won’t stumble. He will provide everything you need for a happy life.
Happiness is not in what you possess — OR who knows your name —- Happiness is in knowing the Lord God Almighty who calls your name!
